NYC: Introduction to Special Education:
Supporting Exceptional Children

This class focuses on understanding the needs of children with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, mental health challenges, oppositional defiance disorder, learning disabilities, and speech and language impairments. You will learn how to support these children’s social, emotional, and academic development.

We will cover practical strategies and accommodations to help at home and in school. Whether you are interested in supporting children in the home or interested in the possibility a career in education, this class will give you some tools and perspective on how to make a positive difference in young learners' lives. 

This course meets in person at our Manhattan campus. There is a mandatory online orientation prior to the weekend and a mandatory final project presentation following class. All students must attend orientation, classes, and final project review.

Requirements and more information:

 

Please note: Your course will consist of a pre-assignment, independent coursework and final assignment as well as class meetings. Credit for J-1 visa students is 36 hours. Students earning J-1 visa credit must attend all sessions and complete all homework.

Your pre-assignment will be emailed to you one week before your class orientation. You will receive details on how to log-in to your orientation one day before the start of the course.

Once the final online class has concluded, you will have one week to submit your independent coursework and final assignment to your teacher.


Students are required to be present during online orientation, classes, and online final project presentations.

Students who require their certificate sooner than outlined above should request their final assignment in advance by contacting BMCC at aupair@bmcc.cuny.edu. Please note that BMCC needs two days from the date a student submits their final assignment to issue an educational certificate.

About your instructor:

Sara Lenore

Sara Lenore is a teacher and reading specialist in the Connecticut school system. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Boston University and her Master's Degree in Literacy from Pace University. She has a TEFL Certificate from her studies in Peru and has taught English as a Second Language to children, adolescents and adults. Sara has been working with BMCC Au Pair Experience for nearly 6 years and loves it!
